We passed through Sedona today on our way up to Flagstaff. We did about 4500 feet of climbing to get to Flagstaff. Most of the climb was gradual. The last 3 miles were steeper and the roads were Perry windy. Also we had to contend with a lot of traffic. 2 large tour buses passed me near the top. But they did a good job to stay away from the cyclists.
We ate lunch in Flagstaff but it got really windy as we left Flagstaff we got onto a very rough section of route 66. I hit a bunch of rough road at about 25 miles per hour. A jacket it that was attached to my rear rack with bungee cords came loose and got wrapped up around my free wheel. Thankfully it did not foul the spokes. It took me about 10 minutes to get my wheel out and the jacket free.
We expected tailwinds from Flagstaff to Winslow. Not so. We had side winds with gusts up to 40 miles per hour. Some of it was slow and tough going. It is very difficult mentally to keep a positive attitude when Mother Nature is pushing you around like a tumble weed.
We did about 50 miles on Interstate 40 to get to Winslow. But I think everyone finish before 5 p.m..
My leg muscles continue to feel sore but they are not getting worse. My main concern is whether I am pedaling at a pace that is sustainable. I think I am. Each day when I start I feel pretty good and when I finish although I am tired I still feel pretty good
I really really appreciate all the comments well wishing and prayers. This is an amazing bunch of cyclists. I heard someone mention that the tour coordinator think this may be the strongest group of riders he has ever taken on this fast America tour. Wouldn't you know it I would pick the one year everyone is faster and stronger than I am. But I am learning a lot about riding long distances.
Mark, sounds like you're riding well and staying strong. Remember to stay within yourself and stick with your game plan. Keep in mind, a full day of rest this Sunday in New Mexico - almost there.
ReplyDeleteYou're the man.
Scott
Thanks bud.
DeleteI figure I am willing to put out 10-12 hours of hard work and if it ain't enough to get it done, then someone is sagging me into the next stop ;)
You need to meet my roommate. Very knowledgeable and strong cyclist. I am learning a lot from him. He trains with a power meter and knows a lot about training recovery and nutrition.
Hi Babe,
ReplyDeleteI am giving you a rub down from a far. I am so happy you have a rest day coming up. Pamper that body and do a salt soak. I wish I could be there with you so I could just rub your head, legs, feet and any thing else you needed. I am sending you something in the next box that should help. Thinking about you throughout the day. Love PP
Boy a rub down sounds nice. Will have to wait I guess til I see you in Boston.
DeleteHey Mark, Brian R. stopped by today with a silo question, wondering when you were gonna be back ....
ReplyDeleteYour journey is an inspiration, Mark. Glad you survived being a tumbleweed, and I hope the winds are more in your favor tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteKudos to you Mark...what a awesome adventure, thanks for allowing me to share in one of your dreams. The pics continue to be great and your comments uplifting. I am encouraged to plan something adventurous for my 50th next year...thanks again, keep the faith that u are as strong as you want to be and continue to enjoy the ride. Much love Rhonda
ReplyDeleteYou were, indeed, fortunate in your roommate assignment. Pick his brain and soak up the pearls of wisdom. Stick with your game plan; it is working well for you. Your goal is the only one that matters. You have already accomplished what few can. Enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you did it with the stiffest competition.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures are great.
I was hoping you wouldn't experience the winds, but they come with the terrain.
Mom
Hey Uncle Mark!
ReplyDeleteI just got caught up on your progress, and this is really an amazing accomplishment you are in the midst of!! Very proud of you! I've been doing spin class 2x week and its a tough class...I'll say it helps me "feel your pain" out there! Keep up the good work!
~Tisha
Love your comments and pictures Mark :)
ReplyDeleteI wish I was there riding with you! Take one day at a time and enjoy the journey. After this ride doing the Markelville Death ride will be a "Piece of Cake". Hey, isn't that the name of the remote controlled airplane I got you over 20 years ago.... Never mind, just trying to take your mind off your ride for a brief second. Keep going buddy, I believe in you ...
Great Job today boo. Each day you are one day closer to your goal and I personally am picturing you at the end and me giving you a big embrace. Love you immensely and I am enjoying knowing that you are doing something special to you. Remember god is riding along side of you. love PP
